Steps to Get Started
1. Make the Decision
Research a career as a professional Realtor and talk it over with your spouse or others whose opinion you value. You will need the support of those around you to reach your potential.
2. Arrange Your Finances
A career in real estate is more like opening your own professional practice than accepting a position as a salesperson. Be sure that your finances will allow a fair chance for your new career to succeed.
3. Successfully Complete Real Estate School
Every state requires that you attend and successfully pass a course in real estate. Most prospective Realtors attend private schools which specialize in the real estate course, but many colleges and community colleges offer the class work required by the state.
4. Pass the State Exam
Most students pass the state licensing exam the first time they try. Real estate schools boast of a student pass rate of over 90%. What statistics don't tell you is the hard work and study required to successfully pass the exam. You will need to schedule dozens of hours for study while preparing for the exam.
5. Select a Brokerage
Once you pass the state exam you will need to select a real estate brokerage to associate with. Investigate the pros and cons of brokerages you are considering to make a careful and considered decision.
6. Apply for Your License
To obtain a license, you must be at least 18 years old and will need to submit fingerprint cards for a criminal background check. Your license will arrive in approximately two weeks after you pass the exam and you can begin your new career.
