With nine public institutions and two private universities scattered all across the state, you will find that not only are the students of Utah’s colleges receiving an education, but the surrounding communities are benefitting as well. Utah’s institutions of higher learning spread culture and learning beyond the sphere of their student bodies. Public Colleges: Located in Price, a quiet community with a population of 10,000 about two hours southeast of Salt Lake City is the College of Eastern Utah. The school, located in a semi-tropical climate 300 miles south of Salt Lake City and 110 miles northeast of Las Vegas, now has over 6,000 students attending. Dixie offers associates of arts, science and applied science degrees, as well as over 35 certificate programs. Snow College offers its 2,700 students associates of arts, science and computer science degrees. 150 E College Ave., Ephraim (435) 283-7000 Located three hours south of Provo and three hours north of Las Vegas is Southern Utah University, offering its 5,800 students associates, bachelors and masters degrees, as well as some certificates Southern Utah University is also the host of the annual Utah Shakespearean Festival. 351 W Center, Cedar City (435)586‑7700 The University of Utah or the “U” is one of the 87 universities across the nation designated by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a “Research I” institution. It is also the site for the award-winning Huntsman Cancer Institute. Over 26,000 students attend this Salt Lake City university that offers bachelor’s, masters and doctoral degrees. The University of Utah also has a law school and a medical school. 240 S University Street, Salt Lake City (801) 581‑7200 Over 20,000 students attend Utah State University in Northern Utah. It began as an agriculture school and while it remains one of the strongest in that field (they aren’t the Aggies for nothin’), it offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees, including a well-reputed teaching program. Utah State University, Logan (435) 797-1000 Over 18,000 students attend Utah Valley State College. Many study the general education requirements and then transfer to a university. However, as UVSC continues to add more and more 4-year programs, many students also find they can complete their degree in all in one place.
