Using a brightly colored marker, write the appropriate room name boldly on the box along with the general contents in smaller print for your own reference. Your boxes will be found in the proper rooms and you will be able to find what you need without opening every box.
Instead of wrapping in newspaper, wrap your breakables in paper towels. This way you won’t have dirty dishes to unpack and you can use the paper towels for cleaning in your new home.
Once your refrigerator is completely empty, clean thoroughly and stuff with crumpled newspapers for the trip.
Don’t throw these away! You may need addresses and phone numbers of previous schools, banks, doctors, etc.
When you are finished cleaning your previous home, place supplies in a bucket with a mop and a broom and load last. These will be the first things out of the moving van and may be needed before unloading your belongings at your new location.
Have a box packed with items such as toilet paper, a couple of towels, soap, diapers and wet wipes (if you have babies or small children) and quick snacks. Take this box with you in your car for easy access.
Use large freezer bags to pack individual drawer contents before placing in boxes. When unloaded at your new home, simply place bags in drawers and unpack at your convenience.
Leave the fitted sheet on the mattress and place a clean top sheet, lightweight blanket, and pillow case inside. No time will be lost looking for bedding when the little ones are worn out and ready for bed.
If moving to a different town and cancelling your newspaper subscription, start your new subscription to arrive at your new home when you do. You will know what stores are in the area from the ads.
Refill any prescriptions prior to departure and put them in your essentials box. It may be several weeks before you see your new doctor.
